The main task of a national rail traffic register is keeping records of railways, rolling stock as well as train drivers, special rolling stick drivers and assistant drivers.
Rail transport is prohibited on a railway not registered in the rail traffic register. Rolling stock not registered in the register of Estonia or some other country is forbidden to be used in rail transport. Rolling stock registered abroad can be used by railway companies operating in Estonia when providing a rail transport service pursuant to international agreements.
The Technical Regulatory Authority may refuse to register rolling stock or railway that does not comply with the established requirements.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications shall be responsible for processing the rail traffic register and the Technical Regulatory Authority shall be the authorised processor.
